FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Celebrating Halloween

Where does Halloween actually come from?

From Samhain, the Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter. On the night of October 31 the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to thin, so people lit bonfires, wore disguises and left food out, and the Druids used the night for prophecy.

Rome absorbed the Celtic lands and two Roman festivals blended in: Feralia, which honored the dead, and a day for Pomona, goddess of fruit and trees, who is the likeliest ancestor of bobbing for apples. Christianity reached the Celtic world by the 9th century and All Saints' Day settled on November 1; around the year 1000 the church added All Souls' Day on November 2. The night before All Saints' became All Hallows' Eve.

Trick-or-treating comes from souling, the medieval English practice of going door to door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for food. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried the whole bundle to North America, where it became the costumes-and-candy holiday we have now.

Why do we carve pumpkins?

Because the pumpkin was an upgrade. The original jack-o'-lanterns were carved in Ireland and Scotland out of turnips, and sometimes beets or large potatoes, hollowed out and lit with an ember to keep wandering spirits away. A turnip is dense and stubborn to hollow, and the faces that came out of them were genuinely unsettling.

The name comes from Stingy Jack, the folk figure condemned to wander the earth with a coal inside a carved turnip. When Irish immigrants reached North America they found the pumpkin, native to the Americas, far bigger, softer and easier to carve. The turnip never came back.

It's the same instinct behind our Spooky Charcuterie workshop, where the chef shows your team how to turn fruit into pumpkins and ghosts.

What can our team do this Halloween?

Five Halloween experiences, all live, led by a chef, a mixologist or a games master:

  • Spooky Charcuterie, 60 minutes. Build a Halloween board with an actual color scheme, fruit carved into pumpkins and ghosts, and some very silly salami.
  • Yummy Mummy Calzone, 90 minutes. Pizza dough from scratch, wrapped mummy-style around pepperoni and cheese, with a bloody marinara for dipping.
  • Trick or Treat Candy, 60 minutes. Homemade peanut butter cups and honeycomb brittle.
  • Bewitching Brews Happy Hour, 45 minutes. Two cocktails, the Witch's Potion and the Poison Apple, with a recipe card and enough in the kit for four drinks. Add 15 minutes of games, trivia, a lightning scavenger hunt or a story relay.
  • Murder Mystery, 90 to 120 minutes. Your team boards the Sapphire Seas for a masquerade ball, a murder happens, and Detective Harper needs help before the killer strikes again. Mixology is built in.

Murder Mystery groups larger than 15 get split into smaller games so everyone actually gets to play.

What are the scariest dishes in the world?

A Halloween icebreaker that beats any trivia question. None of these are on our menus:

  • Balut, from the Philippines: a developing duck embryo, boiled and eaten straight from the shell.
  • Casu marzu, from Sardinia: a sheep's milk cheese deliberately colonized by cheese fly larvae, which are alive when it reaches the table.
  • Hákarl, from Iceland: shark fermented for months, with an ammonia smell that locals cheerfully admit is an acquired taste.
  • Surströmming, from Sweden: fermented Baltic herring so pungent the tins are usually opened outdoors.
  • Fugu, from Japan: pufferfish that is lethal if prepared badly, which is why chefs train for years before they're licensed to serve it.
  • Century egg, from China: duck or chicken eggs cured in clay, ash and lime until the yolk turns dark green and the white becomes an amber jelly.
  • Sannakji, from Korea: octopus cut up and served so fresh the pieces are still moving.

Our Halloween menus are considerably friendlier. The scariest thing on them is honeycomb brittle, and only because it foams up over the side of the pan.

Why book a themed Halloween event instead of a costume contest on a video call?

A costume contest lasts four minutes and rewards whoever owns the best wig. A workshop fills the whole hour with something everyone is doing at once, and it gives the people who hate performing something to do with their hands.

October is also the easiest sell on the calendar. Nobody needs convincing to show up for Halloween, so attendance takes care of itself, and the theme does the decorating: a spooky board, a mummy calzone or a Poison Apple cocktail on every screen without anyone on your side planning a thing.

Will this work for a team that doesn't cook, and for people who are remote?

Yes on both counts. The chef teaches live, ingredients arrive pre-portioned, and nothing on the Halloween list needs prior skill. The charcuterie board and the candy workshop in particular are assembly and decoration.

Groups run from 3 to 600 or more, with very large teams split by department or across days. Zoom is the default, and Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and WebEx all work. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and no-alcohol versions cost nothing extra when you tell us in advance, and the happy hour has a full mocktail version. Kits ship free within the US and internationally to Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, Spain and elsewhere.

Can families and kids join in?

Yes, and Halloween is the one people most want to share. Family and partners join free on the same screen, and the cooking kits are sized to feed a family of four, so a parent cooking alongside a seven-year-old isn't stretching anything.

Choose with the room in mind. Spooky Charcuterie is the easiest one for small children: it's arranging and decorating, fruit turned into pumpkins and ghosts, and no heat at all. The Yummy Mummy Calzone hands them dough to wrap, which is the most fun anyone will ever have with pepperoni. Trick or Treat Candy involves molten sugar, so that one belongs to adult hands with a small audience. And the Bewitching Brews happy hour has a full mocktail version, worth knowing if the under-tens also want a Poison Apple.

What do the five Halloween experiences cost?

Rates depend on the menu and the size of the group. Spooky Charcuterie is $795 for a group under 5, then $159 per person from 5 to 30, $149 from 31 to 50 and $139 above that. Yummy Mummy Calzone runs $745, then $149, $139 and $129. Trick or Treat Candy is $695, then $139, $129 and $119. Murder Mystery is $895 under 5 and $179 per person from 5 to 14. The Bewitching Brews happy hour is priced two ways: as mocktails it's $495 under 5, then $99, $89 and $79 per person across the usual bands, and with alcohol delivered it's $745, then $149, $139 and $129.

Each rate covers the chef, mixologist or games master running your event, a dedicated event planner, delivery, gratuities and all service fees.

On timing: cooking events want about three weeks and happy hours about four, and Halloween has the tightest crush of any date we run, because the whole thing collapses into the last week of October. Whoever asks first gets the 30th and the 31st. If your group is over 15 and you want the Murder Mystery, ask earlier still — it runs as several simultaneous smaller games and that takes more games masters.

A $250 deposit holds it, and we take credit card, ACH bank transfer or check. Cancel 21 or more days out and you are refunded what you paid less any nonrecoverable costs already committed; 8 to 20 days out you choose between a 50% refund and a 100% Rockoly credit; inside 8 days payments are nonrefundable, though one complimentary reschedule is yours if you ask 14+ days ahead. Everything is covered by the Love Your Event Guarantee: your team should have an amazing experience, and if your Rockoly event doesn't live up to expectations, we'll make it right. Fill out the form on this page and a planner will get back to you, or call (617) 939-9732 or email events@rockoly.com.
