Celebrating International Women’s Day
What is International Women's Day?
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global observance celebrated annually on March 8th. The day is dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and to promoting gender equality. The theme for International Women’s Day changes each year and is aimed at inspiring actions that will advance gender equality. The first International Women’s Day was observed in 1911, and since then, it has grown into a global movement, with events and activities taking place in many countries around the world. On this day, people come together to celebrate the achievements of women and to call for further action to advance gender equality and women’s rights. The day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made and to recommit to creating a world in which women have equal opportunities and can fully participate in all aspects of life.

Why is International Women's Day celebrated on the 8th of March?
The history of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century, when women in several countries, including the United States and Europe, began to organize and protest for their rights, including the right to vote, work, and receive equal pay. In 1908, women in New York City held a march demanding equal rights, and this inspired similar events in other countries.
In 1910, the International Socialist Women’s Conference was held in Copenhagen, and it was there that the idea of a global day to celebrate women’s rights was proposed. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in several European countries, and it has been observed on March 8th since 1913.
Since then, International Women’s Day has become a worldwide observance, celebrated by individuals, organizations, and governments. The day provides an opportunity to highlight the progress made towards gender equality and to call for further action to address the persistent challenges and barriers facing women and girls around the world.
