FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Bay Area In-Person FAQs

Can we host the event at our office, or do you provide a venue?

Either one. A conference room, a cafeteria or an open floor all work — downtown San Francisco, the Peninsula, a Silicon Valley campus or the East Bay, it makes no difference to us. The chef comes to you with all the ingredients, supplies and equipment, so you don’t need a commercial kitchen, and your event coordinator goes over the room with you before the date. If your building is strict about cooking, or you’d rather get people out of the office entirely, your coordinator lines up a nearby venue sized to your group.

What actually happens during the two hours?

Your team cooks for most of it. The shape of a Rockoly in-person event looks like this: Arrival: themed appetizers and non-alcoholic refreshments come with every menu, so there’s something to eat while people filter in. Hands-on: the chef demonstrates a technique, then everyone works it at their own station — shaping cavatelli, rolling maki, building a charcuterie board. The payoff: you sit down and eat what you made, often with an add-on like the Pesto Relay Race or the Charcuterie Tournament turning it into friendly competition. Cleanup: our crew handles it, so the room is back to normal before anyone has to think about it. There are no icebreakers, no slides and nothing anyone has to present.

Any Bay Area food story worth telling while we cook?

San Francisco sourdough, and the best part is that it is literally named after the city. The bacterium responsible for the sour tang in local starters was isolated and formally described in 1971 as Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis — one of very few organisms on the taxonomic record named for a city because of its bread. It works in partnership with a wild yeast, the bacteria producing the acids and the yeast the lift, and the whole culture is passed on rather than bought. Boudin has been baking from a mother dough begun in 1849, which makes the loaf older than most of the buildings around it. It is exactly the sort of thing our chefs get going on while a team is elbow-deep in dough for Cavatelli & Competition, and it is also why the bread on a Charcuterie & Connection board is worth more attention than it usually gets.

Half our team says they can’t cook. Will this work?

That’s the normal starting point, and the format assumes it. Every step gets demonstrated before you try it, the chef works the room while you cook, and event helpers catch any station that falls behind. These menus were picked because a beginner can finish them in one session. If someone would rather not touch food at all, there’s still a job for them — plating, tasting, judging the competition. Everybody eats either way.

Who from Rockoly shows up on the day?

A full crew, so nobody on your side has to run anything. A Bay Area event brings: A chef or mixologist who leads the session, demonstrates each technique and coaches every station. Event helpers who prep ingredients, build the stations and answer questions as you go. Your dedicated event coordinator, who works out menu, timing, venue and dietary requirements with you well before the date and stays your single point of contact. A setup and cleanup crew — the space is ready before your team walks in and restored after they leave. Catering staff, when your menu adds a buffet or a main course. Event insurance is part of every package. Your only job on the day is to point us at the room.

What does the rate cover, and what costs extra?

Your per-person rate depends on the menu and your headcount — groups run from 3 people to 600 and up, with very large ones usually split by department or across days — and it covers the event end to end: Live instruction from your chef or mixologist. All ingredients, supplies and equipment. Setup and cleanup by the Rockoly team. Extra food and drinks, so no one leaves hungry. A dedicated event coordinator, plus free customizations. Event insurance. Customizing costs nothing. Mix a cooking workshop with Mixology & Mingle so the evening starts at the stove and ends behind the bar, swap in the Bay Office BBQ Bash if you want the grill going, or reshape a menu around your team. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and no-alcohol are all accommodated at no extra charge when you tell us in advance. Only named extras add to the bill: custom aprons with names or your logo at $40 per person, wine and beer pairings, a chicken piccata main, tiramisu.

Can we include people who aren’t on the team — a client, a partner, an exec stopping by?

Yes, and three of this page’s menus were written with it in mind. Rolling & Bonding, Charcuterie & Connection and Tapas & Talk all run as client appreciation events as happily as team ones, because guests have something to do with their hands instead of a long table and a conversation somebody has to keep alive. The one thing to get right is the headcount: anyone who’s going to cook needs to be on the list you give your coordinator, because stations, ingredients and dietary needs are all set to that number. Someone dropping in for ten minutes to say hello doesn’t need a station at all — themed appetizers and non-alcoholic refreshments are out from the start, and every package includes extra food and drinks so nobody leaves hungry. Send your coordinator the guest names and anything they don’t eat; their dietary needs are handled exactly like your own team’s, at no extra charge.

When should we start planning?

Earlier than feels necessary, mostly because of the geography. One chef roster covers San Francisco, the Peninsula, the South Bay and the East Bay, so two offices wanting the same Thursday is a real constraint rather than a formality. Three weeks is the working minimum for a cooking event and four for a happy hour; rush dates are sometimes possible when a chef is free, so ask instead of assuming. A deposit reserves the date, payable by credit card, ACH transfer or check. Cancel 30 or more days out and you are refunded what you paid less any nonrecoverable costs already committed; 15 to 29 days out you choose between a 50% refund and a 100% Rockoly credit; inside 15 days payments are nonrefundable, though one complimentary reschedule is yours if you ask 30+ days ahead. Every event carries the Love Your Event Guarantee: if yours doesn't live up to expectations, we'll make it right. Start with the inquiry form on this page, or call (617) 939-9732 and a coordinator will talk through dates and rooms with you.

"Our Bay Area Rockoly event was such a special experience. Chef Emily made it feel like we were reuniting with old friends. Chef Emily brought incredible energy, kindness, and professionalism, and it was obvious how excited everyone was to have her leading the event. She made every guest feel included while keeping the cooking experience fun and easy to follow. As the event organizer, it is rare that I get to fully participate, but the Rockoly team handled everything so confidently that I could relax and enjoy the evening with everyone else. The people truly made this event unforgettable!"
