SOLVING THE MYSTERY

Happy Hour Murder Mystery FAQs

What is the Virtual Team Happy Hour Game?

A live murder mystery called A Murder at the Masquerade, played over video with a drink in hand. Your team boards the luxurious cruise ship The Sapphire Seas for a masked ball, a body is discovered, the ship is at sea with nowhere for the killer to go, and Detective Harper needs your colleagues' help to find them.

Everyone takes on a secret role. The game runs on people questioning each other, comparing notes and changing their minds out loud, which produces the kind of conversation a normal team call never gets near. A live games master keeps the story moving, and it ends with a reveal.

You can run it three ways: the game on its own, the game with a mocktail kit, or the game with a full cocktail kit and a personal mixologist. Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes for the game alone and 90 to 120 minutes with the drinks.

Will this land with a remote team, or is it just another video call?

The difference is that everyone is holding something. A kit arrives at each person's door beforehand, so the session opens with your whole team making the same drink in a dozen different kitchens instead of staring at a grid of faces.

The secret roles do the rest. Everyone is playing somebody, which hands the quieter half of the room a reason to speak that a trivia round never gives them, and the script does the prompting so nobody has to be called on.

The practical side is handled. Zoom is the default, and Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and WebEx all work. Pick the hour that suits the most timezones and your planner builds around it. Partners and family join free on the same screen, Rockoly takes a group photo, and free team building games, trivia and a mini scavenger hunt, come with the event. Over 1,000 events in and rated 5 stars on Google across 105 reviews, this is a well worn path.

Where does the phrase happy hour actually come from?

From a ship, which makes it a fitting name for a game set on one. The phrase is usually traced to the US Navy, where by the 1910s a scheduled happy hour aboard a vessel meant an entertainment break for a crew with nowhere else to go: boxing, music, films. Drinks had nothing to do with it.

So where did the drinking come in?

Between 1920 and 1933 the United States banned the manufacture and sale of alcohol, and drinking moved into speakeasies and private homes, often in the hour before heading out to a legally dry restaurant. The bartenders of that era were working with rough, hurried spirits, so they leaned hard on citrus, sugar and juice to cover the flaws. That template of a spirit, something sour and something sweet was already generations old by then, but a huge share of the classics we still drink follow it. The Margarita Duo kit is exactly that shape.

And why does the citrus have to be fresh?

Squeezed lemon and lime juice starts losing its character within a few hours. The aromatic oils oxidize, the bright top notes go first, and by the next day the juice tastes flat and faintly cooked. Bottled juice never had those notes to begin with. It's most of the difference between a homemade sour that tastes dull and one that tastes like a bar made it, and it's the cheapest habit your team can carry home from the session.

What's in the kit, and what happens if one doesn't arrive?

Each kit holds a recipe card and enough ingredients for four drinks, two recipes with two servings each, sent to every participant. Standard US shipping is free. International delivery reaches Australia, the UK, Canada, Sweden, Ireland, Germany, South Africa, Mexico, India and Spain among others, and anyone the courier can't reach gets a shopping list instead.

Every kit is insured. If one is lost, delayed or damaged, a replacement goes out, and Rockoly collects the delivery addresses through its own form, so you aren't chasing colleagues for home addresses or holding them yourself.

Three kits pair with the game. Magic Show brings the color changing Lavender Magic and a sparkling Pineapple Spice. Lotus Kit is the ambitious one, with a vivid blue coconut and lime Tranquility under a silky foam and an Inner Fire of lapsang souchong tea, tart cherry and maple poured into a rosemary smoked glass. Margarita Duo is spicy and mango. Dietary adjustments, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and alcohol free, are free when you flag them in advance.

Does everyone need a cocktail shaker, or any bar equipment?

Nobody has to go out and buy barware. Each kit arrives with a recipe card and enough supplies to make four drinks, and your planner can confirm exactly what's in the box for the kit your team picks. Anything a home kitchen is missing improvises easily: a jar with a tight lid shakes a drink as well as a proper tin does, a fork will muddle, a teaspoon measures.

Ice is the one thing worth a minute of thought. Big cubes have less surface area for their volume, so they melt slower and water the drink down less, which is why bars cut their ice large, and why a glass packed to the top actually dilutes less than one with three lonely cubes rattling around in it. Fill a tray the night before and your team is set.

And if you book the game on its own, there is nothing to gather at all beyond the call itself.

What does it cost, and can people opt out of the alcohol?

The game on its own is the cheapest way in at $350 for groups under 5, then $70 per person for 5 to 14. Add the drinks and it's $645 under 5 or $129 per person for the mocktail version, and $895 under 5 or $179 per person with cocktails. That rate covers the games master, the mixologist on the drinks versions, a dedicated event planner, ingredient delivery, gratuities and all service fees.

Alcohol is never assumed. On the happy hour kit cards the price toggles between Mocktail and With Alcohol, and Mocktail is selected by default. The spirit, vodka, gin, bourbon, rum or tequila, is picked individually and ships separately, and choosing it moves the card to the With Alcohol rate, roughly $50 more a head. A team can be half and half without anyone having to explain themselves.

The happy hour kit cards further down the page carry their own tiered rates, running from $109 per person down to $79 at the largest tier for mocktails depending on the kit and the headcount. Your planner confirms the exact quote for the pairing you choose.

How many people can play, and how far ahead do we need to book?

Anywhere from 3 people to 600 and up, with one caveat: a mystery needs a small enough room that everyone gets to speak. A single game runs up to 14 players, and 15 or more are divided into smaller simultaneous games for better interactivity. For very large companies that usually means splitting by department or spreading the event over a couple of days. A straight mixology happy hour scales further in one room, since the kits are priced through 50 plus participants.

On timing, four weeks is the number for a happy hour. Kits ship to every address and any alcohol moves separately, so drinks events need a week more runway than cooking events, which need about three. Rush dates are sometimes possible depending on availability, so ask before you assume a date has gone.

Which version should we book, and how?

Settle the format before the date, because it is the only decision that changes the price meaningfully. The game on its own is the cheap, low-logistics option and ships nothing. The mocktail version adds a kit and a mixologist. The cocktail version adds the spirits, which travel separately and are chosen person by person. If your group is genuinely mixed, book the kit and let people toggle — nobody has to announce anything.

Then fill in the form on this page and a planner comes back with available dates, a quote and a kit recommendation. A $250 deposit holds your date, and you can pay by credit card, ACH bank transfer or check. Cancel 21 or more days out and you are refunded what you paid less any nonrecoverable costs already committed; 8 to 20 days out you choose between a 50% refund and a 100% Rockoly credit; inside 8 days payments are nonrefundable, though one complimentary reschedule is yours if you ask 14+ days ahead.

Every event carries the Love Your Event Guarantee: your team should have an amazing experience, and if your Rockoly event doesn't live up to expectations, we'll make it right. If you would rather talk first, call (617) 939-9732 or email events@rockoly.com.
